Kristen Hinman has a very good article on Superintendent Dr. Diana Bourisaw's new directive to her staff to ensure that all participants in the district's basketball program are eligible to play according to the state's guidelines.
From the article:
"I believe they'll do an excellent job checking into that," Bourisaw says. "If [the students] are not eligible, whether it's because of grade-point average or residency, they will not be allowed to participate."

It’s about time. The only thing most of the district coaches are worried about is winning. The students are given grand illusions about getting scholarships to go to college by doing well on the field instead of the classroom. Having received a sports scholarship is was what I did in the classroom as well on the field. I had to attend study sessions, tutoring, and show significant class progress in order to keep my scholarship. If I missed a study session it was the same as missing a practice. In some cases I was not allowed to participate in a meet/game because I didn’t attend a study session.
I point out to the student athletes who are in my classroom that they are competing with students across the country for the scholarships that are awarded. I asked them if the talent level is the same but you have a low grade point average and another student has a higher gpa who do they think will get the scholarship? Universities/Colleges are going to select students will be good representatives of the school (both on and off the field).
