It's sad to see that the strides Pruitt has made will be undone with the elimination of that program.

It would be useful if the posting stated what criteria were used. At least one of those principals has only been at the school for one year. Any MAP scores would reflect the test given the previous year.

wait a minuet their not eliminating the program now because cleveland is going to be 7-12 right? I have a son in 8th grade who enjoyed the military program and was overjoyed to hear the news that clevland was going to come to pruitt and be 7-12. i ask here only because i get more information about the situation from this web site than the school district itself.Brenda

Brenda:
In his usual fashion, Superintendent Williams completely avoided the question of the current Pruitt program, when, at last weeks' school board meeting, Board President O'Brien asked. The resolution to move the Cleveland cadets did not address the existing Pruitt program. So, President O'Brien asked, after-the-fact, whether based on previous discussions the programs would be combined or if the Pruitt program would be closed, which would be a shame. Her question was never answered by the Superintendent. So, I would suppose that the program is completely at the mercy of the Superintendent's office.

I am happy for those principals. However I want to congraulate the teachers who did such a wonderful job in making the principals look good. It is a shame the teachers didn’t get recognize by the state or the union.

Travis,
You must not have been at the same meeting I attended. Williams clearly said there would no longer be a 7-8 military option. He said his previous proposal for relocating the Cleveland program included 7-12, but the community did not like the site he picked. Pruitt doesn't have the space for the extra grades. He also went into great detail about how the low enrollment at Pruitt and Madison does not support keeping them.

Unfortunately, the teacher's union has been passive throughout the mud-slinging attacks against teachers. At least the administrator's union recognized the "outstanding" administrators, but I agree with anonymous who noted that these principals could only be as good as the work of the teachers in that building. Yes, it's the teachers who make a building and a principal shine. No, we don't have a union who has paid us any such positive recognition. It would be nice if Local 420's leadership came out of hiding and discontinued its AWOL behavior. Speak up for us, please! We pay enough union dues. The union president makes a good salary of $90,000 a year. So why the silence Local 420?

Anon #2,
We haven't the slightist idea in terms of the criteria used to select principals. In this district, they are not chosen based on any particular "track record." Isn't that strange? It's still "the good ole boy" network of cronyism, etc. Seemingly Creg Williams has bought into this mindset and is placing his people in place, especially people from out of town.
Another observation is that the principals have been used to play musical chairs also. Some of the schools have had 3-4 principals in as many years. Why? Apparently the decision makers (superintendent?) does not realize the importance of stability in the schools. Wouldn't it be great if we could see some criteria in terms of how principals and assistant principals are chosen? We know that they are supposed to have principal's certification, but we don't know anything else. They are just suddenly assigned to a school and immediately begin to give orders.

I take offense to hearing from Dr. Williams, that Pruitt wasn't really a military program. I would challenge you any day in a Drill, in Military Science or in just saying the Cadet Creed. We had qualified, caring teachers and I see Principal Buie made the DESE list. I am confused, first we were a failing school, second we had low enrollment, and now we weren't really a military program? I can only hope to find out before August, the school I will be attending for eighth grade. I also would appreciate since I have been erased as a Staff Sgt. at Pruitt to be given priority acceptance into Cleveland NJROTC for my high school years. What about the Military Academy that was modeled after Pruitt, I guess that's not really a military program either? I would like to thank Purdy, Downs, Jones and O'Brien for looking into matters and asking the right questions, I believe they want no child left behind.

I THINK THE BRIAN HARRIS COMMENT WAS UNCALLED FOR--SHOWS YOUR STUPIDITY! NO ONE DESERVES A COMMENT LIKE THAT! MAYBE YOU NEED TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL OR HAVE YOUR MOTHER WASH YOUR MOUTH OUT AND UNCLOG YOUR BRAIN! YOU ARE PROBABLY AN ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL STUDENT---KEEPING OTHERS FROM LEARNING!

It was very upsetting to hear that Pruitt Military Academy was closed. My brother was like a little soldier and doing very
well in the program. He loves the military. It' a shame, I hope he can continue in two years at the high school level at Cleveland.

yea its true they closed pruitt military acad, but hell, we have to get beyond the passed and move toward the future! if we are to grow as a black race we have to learn to over look somethings. School closings is a part of life.

Hello,we're not all black reading and responding to these blogs.I'm not going to get over it, i will continue to voice my protest that the Pruitt program was just tossed aside. Two years ago my kids were RECRUITED to this school district and one of my boys was in the military program because he had a desire to learn that way.Now that school is closing, for two years i participated in fundraising for an eighth grade military ball that he will never attend, and strived for a rank, and a special uniform that he will never get a chance to wear. Until you are in someone elses shoes please don't give out the empty minded advice of Move on and look to the future. Smetimes a little ruffling of the feathers get a bird moving. In this case the head bird i believe is a DoDo.

You go Brenda! Stand up and fight for the education your child wants and deserve. Don’t pay attention to harris who wants to close all of the schools. Plus recruit other parents get petitions call the media, go to the clergy, call everyone you know. Make it a movement. We need parents like you to get involved instead of people like harry who doesn’t care about our future.

Mr. Harris you need to an education about education. I do agree that school closings are a part of life but Pruitt is part of the military cluster program that was set up through the desegregation lawsuit. Even though there has been a settlement there is nothing wrong with having schools that provide certain programs such as military science. The schools still have to meet the state requirements but the school can set graduation requirements as well (even though they are not enforced except at Metro HS). Williams however wants to end all of the magnet schools and make them design centers for the arts or fashion design. But not everyone is going to be an artist or a fashion designer. As far as cost goes yes the district pays the teachers but the military provides a wealth of resources for them to use at no cost to the district. Closing this school will alienate even more parents and students who will be force to seek education elsewhere. But that is what you want for the schools to close so you can sell them.

Pruitt Military School wasn't one of the school affected by "No child Left Behind". My concern was why was it closed and just phased out. The Super has not response to this question to staff or parents. I have heard a lot of rumors, but no answer to this question: Why was Pruitt shut down? Also the principal at Pruitt is been recognized by DESE as one of the most improved schools.

Something must be wrong with me. How can the Williams just come into our district and make changes like closing the Military program without the approval of the courts. What wrong with this picture is he a dictator who makes unjust decision without being held accountable for his actions. I just heard he moved Cleveland to Pruitt and just removed any signs of the middle school program little to no notice to parents. I as a parent received a notice two days prior to the last day. My child has to choose another magnet school to attend. What about my seventh grader wanting to go to Cleveland I guess he want have the opportunity to go to Cleveland, because he's at another magnet school. Very angry and disappointed parent.
