The St. Louis City Teachers' Union Committee on Political Education (COPE) has recommended that the union endorse State Rep. Amber Boykins for state senate.
COPE also recommended former school board member Bill Haas be endorsed in his campaign against State Rep. Rodney Hubbard. We are told that Hubbard never showed up for his scheduled interview with the teachers.
It has been prematurely reported by another website that Local 420 has already endorsed. The union's executive board is not bound to accept the committee's recommendation. Local 420 is expected to announce its full list of endorsements later this week.
Here is a video of all five of the candidates running for state senate discussing the state of St. Louis Public Schools. The candidates are State Reps Amber Boykins and Yaphett El-Amin, former State Rep. Derio Gambaro, former Alderman Kenny Jones, and college professor Jeff Smith.

The picture she paints with the public school issue is that she's better qualified on that issue than jeff because she's a black women from "the north side" and surely a white man doesnt understand the black struggle or how to fix the problem. Jeff's qualified. He didnt grow up black but what would make a northsider think they understand how to run the southside??? Keep that north bull north.... atleast jeff spends time on the north at the boys club, I havent seen either of those ladies down here doin anything!

Rep. Yaphett El-Amin, a Democrat, represents part of St. Louis City (District 57) in the Missouri House of Representatives. She was elected to the House in November 2002.
In 2002 Rep. El-Amin was chosen by American Council of Young Political to accompany a delegation of elected officials from the United States to Vietnam where she met with various entities ranging from government officials to healthcare professionals establishing better foreign relations. The following year Rep. El-Amin was chosen to partake in a peace mission to Dafur, Sudan where she investigated allegations of genocide. Upon her return Rep. El-Amin voiced strongly the need for the United States to increase its humanitarian relief assistance to this region.
Rep. El-Amin works with various civic and community organizations, advocating for issues impacting seniors, children, and the working poor. Rep. El-Amin received a lifetime achievement award from St. Louis Teachers and School Related Personnel Union Local 420, in recognition of exceptional leadership and dedication in support of public education, labor and working families. She also received “A Heart for Children” award from Support-A-Child International in recognition of her efforts to bring about positive change to at-risk youth and children.
Rep. El-Amin earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff and is pursuing a master’s in public administration from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
Born March 30, 1971 in St. Louis, Rep. El-Amin resides there with her husband, Talibdin El-Amin. Together they have one son Hasan and one daughter Ruqiayah.

Rep. Amber H. Boykins, a Democrat, represents part of St. Louis City (District 60) in the Missouri House of Representatives.
Elected to her first term in 1998, Rep. Boykins serves as chair of the City of St. Louis Delegation and the Ranking Member of the Appropriations-Transportation and Economic Development Committee.
Rep. Boykins is the youngest African American woman legislator in the history of the Missouri House. She is also the daughter of former State Representative Billie A. Boykins, who served in the House from 1978-1982. Additionally, Rep. Boykins and former State Representative Boykins are the only mother and daughter combination to serve in the Missouri House. They were featured in Jet Magazine. Essence Magazine also chose Rep. Boykins as one of “30 Women to Watch -- Women at the Top of their Class," the next generation of pioneering black women.
Rep. Boykins has received numerous awards including the Yes I Can Award, St. Louis Teachers and School Related Personnel Local 420, The Cardinal Ritter Prep Dr. Joyce Thomas Leadership Award, Young Democrats Dedicated Leadership in Government Award and the Making a Difference Award from the Order of the Eastern Star.
A 1999 Henry Toll Fellow, Rep. Boykins is a member of the following organizations: Women in Government, state director; Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., a national public service sorority; Council of State Governments; the state Democratic Party; National Order of Black Elected Legislative Women, Secretary; The Links-Archway Chapter; the NAACP; American Council of Young Political Leaders; St. Louis Ambassadors, Columbia College Alumni Board and People for the American Way-Young Elected Officials Network.
Rep. Boykins is a former elementary school educator and day care center director. She has also worked with the mentally challenged and assisted families through the Division of Family Services.
Rep. Boykins is a graduate of Cardinal Ritter College Preparatory High School in St. Louis and a graduate of Columbia College in Columbia, Mo. She is currently pursuing an MBA and a Juris Doctorate.

Amber and Bill were some of the first to join in with the teachers union in their support of Donna Jones and Peter Downs. Though this may be a coincidence but it probably just shows that they think the same way about educating children in the city public schools. That could be why the Teachers union COPE chose to endorse them

Boykins is the best. Like I said she is for the people and serious. She's here to make a difference.
Smith should go back to where he came from and wait until 2008. We want Boykins or El- Amin, a representave who can relate to all groups of people.
We really want Boykins, she is for the public and the people as a whole.
Brain Harris pick up your face because I don't get paid by Boykins, just she represents me and my district extremely good!!!

Who is s. carter??? You just sound like a black who doesnt want to give a whiteman a good look at. If boykins backing for the public schools was so thick and great then that says alot about her because the system is far worse now then it was 8 years ago when she go in office, wouldnt you agree... or would that affect your paycheck? Look, All im saying is you need to see both sides, El-amin has fought harder than boykins, now thats the truth, Im not saying I dont like boykins, I just look at the facts! I wish you were OPEN to look at both sides, the northside blacks and the southside whites, I believe Jeff smith has a good shot at getting into office, look at his track record, look at what he's doing, It looks to me like he's been building himself for office, Now its late and im tired, so good night

Why would anyone choose an absentee Representative over a current educator, public school founder, and community leader, like Jeff Smith, on an education issue?
