I think Mr. Bonner will bring back some integrity that has been missing at the "V" for quite some time.

I have a long list of why Bonner should not be named Head Basketball Coach of Vashon but I will address this one for starters...Everyone knows the economic background at Vashon, we pretty much do the best we can financially. There are times when our children might not have money for necessities and people were so quick to try and judge Coach Irons for things that they knew nothing about and try to make him out to be the villain all awhile Coach Irons made sure that if a kid (a basketball player or non-basketball player) needed money, clothes for school or whatever he helped that kid meet those needs.

Anthony Bonner was recently made, by the courts, to pay over $200,000 child support for his own child if he doesn't care about his own kids, why should we trust him with our kids???? (where is the integrity in that??)Why would he be given a team of this stature when he has never coached anywhere and on any level? The school board is aware of all of this and they hire him anyway, as matter of fact, he wasn't qualified for the position they were originally going to hire him for so they went back to the drawing board and found another one (one you didn't need a Missouri Board of Education Teaching Certificate for). Why does this school board continue making one major mistake after another? And we wonder why our district is in the shape it is in…we have very poor leadership! Mr. Bonner, this is not a personal attack against you, it’s just hard to understand why you would do this?

If this was a different school district such as Parkway, Clayton, or even St. Charles I am sure they would have been in touch with the parents every step of the way. Their parents would not have to find this information out through the media!

As a parent, whose children attend Vashon and are apart of Vashon's Basketball program, I am entitled to ask the following questions concerning Anthony Bonner:

What experience does he bring to the Basketball Program?

What teams has he previously coached in which could be used as references?

What makes Mr. Bonner so qualified?

According to news channels 2, 4 and 5, Mr. Bonner is not a responsible individual. If he could not, would not and DID NOT accept his own responsibilities and had to be threaten with incarceration before taking the necessary steps and hand-outs, what makes the school board think he can act as a responsible adult to guide our children and to assist us, as parents, in preparing them for the future, especially since he had to be forced to take care of his own children.

“Coach” is not just a title. It has a meaning that should only be addressed when earned.
“Coach” is a mentor
“Coach” is a counselor
“Coach” is a leader
“Coach is a father figure in some cases. (we all know that ain’t so in Mr. Bonner’s case)

Does Anthony Bonner possess any of these characteristics?

See you at the press conference!

There has to be some good in a man who would work so hard in such a district for so long.

But the argument that Bonner is irresponsible is actually an indictment of his "mentoring". If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Mr. Irons a big part of Bonner's mentoring?

Well it is clear that Irons had you all write junk on Bonner. Everyone supports this guy. He is truly a role model. Vashon you are your own worst enemy. Support Bonner and the staff at Vashon move on Irons is gone. If you all go after Bonner it is just going to make people believe what they say about Vashon, they can't be helped. If I were on the school board and you all kept this up I would consider closing the palce as nothing makes Vashon happy. Teach the children to work well with all leaders.

Mr. Bonner has never taught. Has never coached. Has never lobbied, in Jeff City, or anywhere else. Has never held any position in 'outreach' either to support children, or any school district, much less a disadvantaged urban district needing help in an outstate-dominated legislature. And for this, SLPS is paying $125,000?

Surely, a financially responsible School Board will enlighten its constituents as to the wisdom of this selection, and the compensation package.

Mr. Irons is gone. I can't speak to his supposed transgressions. I just don't know anything definitive - only the numerous stories and rumors. There isn't any point in comparing Coach Bonner to him. That is past history. I certainly don't question Coach Bonner's hiring as a coach, although his never having worked with young men may be considered troublesome by some. The salient fact is that a supposedly financially resposible SLPS created a job and is paying an exorbitant amount to an inexperienced individual, because, at least in my belief, they feel it will buy them vailitity in the Vashon community. I may well be wrong, and wish the best for the new coach. I simply am questioning the motives and the methodology of the administration that devotes so much precious resource here, where so many other areas are wanting.

If there are any Vashon parents, students, supporters, etc. that have comments regarding your school and YOUR basketball team, I recommend that you find a way to resolve this through meetings with the school board (demand that they speak with you) and others you feel should attend.

Commenting on this blog is really a waste of your time because you will continue to get comments from people that could really care less about Vashon and what has happened to your children. People are quick to comment about serious issues such as this without little thought behind their comment until it happens to them.

The school board should WANT to know how the parents and students feel. They should care enough to ask the players that are directly effected by these actions what they are feeling, these are kids for God Sake and yet they are expected to handle this as adults. We keep saying, “it's for the kids,” but who has asked the kids how they are handling this? Bloggers, don't get offended, and yes, I know this is a public blog, but be mindful when you make the comments that you obviously no nothing about, these players have been through a lot the past several months. They are also being ridiculed by opposing team-mates and yet, they must walk with their heads held high and pretend that everything is okay. Don't be so idiotic when commenting because students do read this site.

to the above anonymous,,,of course SLPS is trying to buy some validity with this move. The never ending "squeaky wheel is getting the oil". I don't necesarily agree with this motive but I am quick to say that I don't have a better idea either. I wish Coach Bonner the best. To all you nay-sayers out there...How much experience did Irons have when they hired him? Must a coach have a certain amount of "coaching experience to have this job? If so where would a person get the experience to hold a job that you have to have experience to get in the first place? Coach Bonner's collegiate and professional career should count for something. Many people are trying to attack the new coach but what I've seen so far he outclasses Irons by a long shot. I've haven't seen Bonner marching in front of his ex-employers home making a total ass of himself.

Inspecteur Clouseau ici: Mes amis, and especially vous parents, a couple of things to tell Mr. Bonner:

1) Don't force teachers to change grades for players.

2) Don't bully teachers, staff, or students.

3) Stay away from cash from the vending machines. Let the bookkeeper keep those records and dole out for expenditures.

4) Post the commandment, "Thou shall not steal" in plain view in your office and on your locker door.

5) Don't get crushes on any of the players.

6) If a big firm like Nike donates sneakers or some other clothing for the students, don't sell them. Give them to the students as the corporation intends

Monsieur Bonner, s'il vous plaît, keep your nose clean.

Inspecteur Clouseau ici: Adric, merci beaucoup.

Why should anyone tell anyone else to go to hell? Vashon is just part of a greater community, that is, the Saint Louis Public Schools and the City of St. Louis. Ergo, it is the concern of all, especially to taxpayers who have invested a lot of their hard-earned money into a school where many students are failing or dropping out or producing babies with no responsible parents to take care of them.

S'il vous plaît, remain civil and respectful of the opinions of others. Too many students exhibit your (last anonymous) anger and disrespect for others, which is why the SLPS faces greater challenges than most county schools.

If you are a parent, madame or monsieur, think of the role model you project.

Inspecteur Clouseau ici: Excusez moi! Telling people to go to hell, en mon opinion, is more than frustration. It is anger and disrespect for others.

If I am frustrated, I don't curse other hommes ou femmes (men or women). If you attend an anger management class, they will tell you that is an inappropriate way to handle anger because it is negative and disrespectful of others.

Vashon has been at the center of attention and concern by the community for years, which is why it finally got a new building of its own.

Je crois(I believe) your anger is misdirected. If you have a son at Vashon, teach him to respect all regardless of opinion, race, creed, or anything else. Teach him to articulate his opinions in positive and respectful ways. You will do your son the biggest favor, and he just may succeed in life against all odds that present themselves to so many students at Vashon.

Mon avis seulement (My opinion only).

I, too, have heard from others in the district that the figure is actually $72,000. They believe that the "spin" figure was put out there to stir up public dissent again, since the Irons thing had been so successful at turning public sentiment against the new board members. After all, "spin" kept the public from the truth about how badly Willimas had bungled things. It is a sad situation when the very people charged with the stewardship of the district are hoping it will fail, so that more Charter schools can open as profit-making ventures (even though Charters typically perform worse than regular public schools).

I agree why is everyone worried about Bonner. I hear Tony Sanders didn't want him moving in on him so went out and gave the wrong salary. The word is Tony Sanders makes more than all the principals with no education or experience. Hear the new supt. turn half the district over to him and he told her to fire Charlene Jones and McGahee. I hear this dude is a real operator.

While I can't speak to any reason that one would fire Charlene Jones, I have seen some of the things that Ms. McGahee has written, and I am rather embarrassed to have her representing other parents. We (parents) aren't really a group of ne'er-do-wells, you know. Many of us have learned to speak and write standard English, regardless of our backgrounds.

The bottom line is that all of these prinicpals, asst principals and people not educating properly, in classrooms are being overpaid because they are doing noting. It is the end of the 1st quarter at Vashon High and not one club has been formed. We have no resources or nothing. How are we supposed to prep for the ACT? Where is the college and post secondary help at? To my understanding, the Board is trying to reorganize the district, but we, the students, don't have the computers, the calculators, the dedicated administration, the effectiveness, the support, the DICIPLINE, or the RESPONSIBILITY.

Something must change by the end of the next quarter and we must make that change. How can we move foward when our education is being put to the side while the community, board and superintendant worrying about salaries and bullcrap?

If you really want to make a change with high schools, I'd say look at Metro... something is working over there, make it work for the district. Make some of those leaders at Metro "top paid" administrators of the district. Spread greatness throughout the disrict. The same thing at Career Academy, share the resources, after all we are all the Saint Louis PUBLIC School District.

What happened to honor roll students being recognized and learning being fun. As I said before I dread getting up in the morning knowing that I have to go to Vashon or any other school in the district. Talking about Vashon and who should be there and who shouldn't, fire the asst principal Steven Clay. He's ineffective and most students take him as a joke. Craig Gronemeyer should be a principal somewhere because he has the integrity, wisdom and strength. By the way who invented "Hall Sweeps"? That crap is a waste of time and it interrupts the learning process.

It would help if Superintendant Bourisaw came to Vashon and intorduces herself to students and evaluate "her" work.

Guess what?... Our 2006-2007 theme at Vashon is "Failure Is Not An Option", half the damn population of students at Vashon are failing because our district is failing and it's not right, and for me, school will never be the same... What's next?

Where is the "stability" DESE??....

Student 101 said, "What happened to honor roll students being recognized and learning being fun." I agree! What happened to the Academic Olympics that Dr. Charlene Jones ran for so many years? Did Williams cancel the one last winter because it wasn't one of his new ideas? Not everything going on in the district needed changing. The high school students cheered their teams for something academic instead of sports related only this one time every year. Why did that have to be the thing that was cut?

We need the emphasis on the issues that Ms. Jones addressed the district was on the way up. It really doesn't matter what anyone says. The school board is going to do what ever they want to do anyway. They do this because we let them. Everybody complains and put in their two cents but whose really doing anything about it. We took the steps to put them in there then let's take the steps to get them out of there.

Every high school has something that they are known for that makes them special.

You say Soldan I think of the band.
You say ROTC I think of the military.
You say VAP I think of acting, dancing, and singing.
And when you say Vashon I think of basketball.

We all know that Vashon has had it's problems but basketball seems to be the one thing that brings the kids and the parents together as a community and as a whole.

I was informed that Bonner doesn't care about going to state or if Vashon ever wins another game.

As I recall, it was because of Vashon's basketball program that helped Bonner reach his goals such as getting a higher education and attending SLU, from SLU to the NBA.

I don't think it's fair to end our kids dreams just because his clock on his walls reads that's all.

Bonner says that Vashon's team is overated but has never seened them play.

Bonner needs to check the stats.

1 lost all season.

But I've got to ask Bonner this, "Did you have the same losing attitude when you were a student and graduate of Vashon or was presented Mr. Show Me?"

Well I see where the money for the fine arts (visual, music and performing arts) went. I continued to be amazed at how this district will spend thousands of dollars on extracurricular activities and teachers have to beg, barrow, and do fund raisers to have the supplies they need to conduct a class. This is the third year that I have not received any art supplies after being told by the art facilitor that we would be getting money for supplies this school year.

Again, if this district wants to be like the other districts then worry about the classroom not the sports arenas.

When a family moves into the St. Louis area and checks into school districts, do they ask their Realtor which district has the best basketball team? Most likely, the districts that are highly regarded are not emphasizing win/loss records. If SLPS students could realize that sports are NOT what should take priority in education, they would have a much better chance at making it into college. Personally, I wish sports were in our schools only in physical education classes.

Your right the parents or more often than not the parent is not asking their realtor which schools is known for basketbal because they are renting or living with family, and in some cases homeless they are poor if not impoverish often on welfare benifits, the only decent way out is a full ride scholarship to college and this is what Irons promised and often delivered them, granted the students often got to the college and dropped out because he/she couldn't keep up academically, but he/she had a shot, a once in a lifetime shot. Don't you think high school and getting a good sound, basic education is a "once in a lifetime shot?" Many more students would get this opportunity at higher education if "education" and "academics" become the focus of Vashon, and not sports.

And when you say "egg on the face of the person who was supposed to catch the mistakes," shouldn't you say "catch the crimes?"

The problems at Vashon are many, n'est-ce pas? Time to focus on the main thing, and the main thing is education and honesty.

To the people who believe that memories are what high school is for, we have our entire lives to build memories. High School is for learning and preparing for your future in the "real"world. For most people this does NOT include professional athletics. Regardless, you still need an education even if you are a professional athlete. What are these athletes supposed to do if their career ends abruptly or earlier than anticipated? How are these athletes to contribute to our society after their athletic career? All students need to be prepared to contribute in society whether they are athletes or not. This means they need every shot at the best education they can get for themselves and take full advantage of what their high schools and colleges have to offer. Sports isn't the end all or be all. There is simply a very small percentage of athletes that end up making it to the pros in the first place. The bottom line, GET A DECENT EDUCATION, that is what should come first.

In my opinion, most of you are correct, "it is about Educating our Kids."

The majority, however, is basing their comments as if Vashon is a school based on academics and high achievement and the athletes are being defiant and are refusing or are not encouraged to learn. Hate Floyd Irons or not, he did his job as coach, these athletes were a nationally ranked basketball team under his tutelage.

Now it is really time to place the emphasis of lack of educating our children in the proper place. This School Board and the Administration at Vashon should be held accountable for not properly educating our kids. Because so many people dislike Coach Irons it’s easy to blame him for everything and that is not fair. Everyone has a role in the education of our children. It starts at home and escalates up to the Board of Education.

It is really troubling that so many people can have a blind eye to the truth and work so hard to bring one man down. Why are you not asking questions such as: what is being taught in the classrooms, Are these teachers qualified to teach, do these teachers care about the education my child receives, is the curriculum challenging and is it preparing my child for college. These and many more questions should be asked others should be held accountable.

If the Board wanted to replace Coach Irons, he should have been allowed to have a proper retirement reception in his honor for all that he has done for this community, like him or not, he put St. Louis on the map with High School Basketball- and that you can’t take away!

Anon at 9:10:56 AM, one of the problems getting qualified teachers is this; there aren't enough qualified teachers. Hence, the qualified teachers that do exist can choose to work in schools that pose fewer problems. My choice to go somewhere other than Vashon to teach is based on my preference for an environment where no one will bully me into coddling a student who is important for a sports team to win. If a student is not doing the work in my classroom, I need to be able to grade accordingly. If a student is not attending class, I need to be able to mark him absent for that day. These are critical pieces in the classroom for learning to take place. If some of the teachers at Vashon are not highly qualified, it is a result of the inability to attract such educators to the environment that has been allowed to flourish there. I realize that even with these problems, there are dedicated teachers who persevere at Vashon, but they are becoming rarer each year.
