ABOUT THE WATCH

"The St. Louis Schools Watch was founded on the premises that parental and community involvement are needed for good schools to flourish, and that public participation is a cornerstone of democracy. The Watch offers information and analysis that we hope contributes to a public debate over what changes are necessary to improve St. Louis public schools, and what works."

Judge: Purdy Can Stay

By Antonio D. French

Filed Thursday, August 31 at 4:32 PM

BREAKING NEWS

A Circuit Court judge has upheld School Board member Bill Purdy's right to sit on the board. Purdy was being sued by two fellow board members, Flint Fowler and Ron Jackson, and 47 other citizens, including fired Vashon basketball coach Floyd Irons. The lawsuit claimed Purdy was serving on the board illegally and should be removed.

The issue was whether a person can run for the school board if he or she has relatives who work in the district. Two of Purdy's daughters and a grandson are teachers in the district. A recent change in state law allows school board members to serve even if they have family working in the system. But the school board bylaws still say that is illegal.

Those bylaws have not been amended to reflect the state law. But today's ruling by Judge Steven R. Ohmer affirms Purdy's assertion that state law trumps board bylaws.

Had Purdy lost the suit and was forced to give up his seat, Mayor Francis Slay would have appointed his replacement, shifting the balance of power on the school board for the second time in six months.

Byron Clemens has emailed all teachers in the district with this information--with Veronica O'Brien as the source.

Slay's coup d'etat has failed. Tune in tomorrow for our next episode...

I hope to goodness this is true.

I notified KMOX, KMOV, and KSDK that the news was posted here.

I was not a smartass when I called KSDK, I was very polite.

The best part is that they not only lost, but have to pay all court costs. It would seem that instead of them Slaying their dragon, our beloved Board member has dragooned the Slays!

Not so fast fellows, I am sure Slay will get his little girls and boys to blast us in the Post by tomorrow. We are in for a tough road ahead. Don't answer your phones as it may be Slay calling to do what he does best, verbally assault people. Stay focused!

I am so glad to hear purdy will remain on the board. I know Slay will try other things, but I am enjoying this victory. I know where I teach, co-workers are impressed with what the board is doing. It is like no other board I have seen. They are pro - student achievement and stand behind their teachers. So thank you to them. This is a great piece of news.

Veronica,
Keep up the good work. There are definitely more people behind you than protesting in front of your house. Please keep moving in a positive direction. We are all counting on this board and this new superintendent to help our children achieve. We want to help and support you. Keep your chin up!
