ABOUT THE WATCH

"The St. Louis Schools Watch was founded on the premises that parental and community involvement are needed for good schools to flourish, and that public participation is a cornerstone of democracy. The Watch offers information and analysis that we hope contributes to a public debate over what changes are necessary to improve St. Louis public schools, and what works."

Storm causes SLPS over $500K in damages

By Antonio D. French

Filed Tuesday, July 25 at 8:20 AM

The storms which left over a half million St. Louis area residents without power for days and caused millions of dollars in property damage also took its toll on St. Louis Public Schools.

District officials report that several schools suffered damaged to roofs. They estimate the cost of the repairs to be somewhere around $525,000. The most severe damage was at Sumner High School, L'Ouverture Middle, and Henry Elementary.

The good news for the bankrupt school district is that insurance will pick up all of the repair costs, excluding the deductible.

The SLPS can't fix the schools that have damage from everyday use what make us think that will be responsible enough to call the insurance company to get the damages taken care of at Sumner (a school who gets no attention). I’m sure that Veronica O’Brien and the rest of the incompetent board will let these repairs go under the radar. This is when you need to call a special meeting. School starts in a couple of weeks and I guarantee you that Sumner’s roof will be leaking in September (oh.. I forget it leaked last school year without the damage from a major storm). I am sick of the SLPS and the way that they are handling themselves (the majority and minority). Did anyone hear about the SLPS officials coming to the aid of their students as many faced power outages for over 5 days? Not one school opened as cooling center…If ever the time for an emergency meeting, the time is NOW. So disappointed but not surprised!!!

You are so right, the schools would have been an excellent option for the heat. Most have TV's, plenty of restrooms, and large gyms. By the way, just how much is this "deductible"?

As I am sure some residents do, it would be beneficial if the district tried to stretch the claim to some of the roofs that had existing damage.

Open schools as cooling centers? Did either of you notice that summer school was cancelled on Friday because so many schools didn't have power? Why are you assuming that schools have power when no one else does?

Actually, this may finally be the moment for Ms. O'Brien to shine. She is, after all, an insurance agent.

Someone, BTW, ought to ask for copies of the district's insurance policies.

Prev Anon. So true, I cannot wait until Aug 28 to start hearing “it is so hot in here!” Hard to conduct a class when it is 90º+F inside let alone outside. At least outside you can find somewhat of a breeze. Before anyone says why don’t I have any fans I have to spend money on supplies. The PTO did buy some fans a couple a years ago but they went to the “core subjects.” Then students did not chip in either. I asked each class to chip in a dollar (give up one soda for the day) but they much rather complain.

Some of the schools do have air conditioning and if they did not lose power, my guess is that anyone could have gone there during the daytime at least. Don't a lot of these schools offer free breakfast & lunch, even if you don't attend the Summer School session. It's some sort of a free meal program for some of these schools during the summer for the community. There was some sort of correspondence sent out regarding this meal program. My guess is they figured we knew this opportunity was available and would use it if we needed it. Don't always sell our district short. Use some of your own resources! Network-why is it always someone elses responsibility to take care of your needs? Work together-did anyone check on this when they needed it? or are you just whining because no one offered it?

Summer school ended July 14th except for the 8th graders entering 9th grade. They were the only ones whose classes were cancelled Thursday and Friday last week.

I think the Summer Food Service Program for general public under age 18 ended 7/14 as well.

I remember the early 90s being in the gifted summer school at Enright CJA: no A/C of course, and no elevators either, so we carried TVs and student-built simulated "Mars" cubes up as many as four flights of stairs. See, the "auditorium" (really just a big long open room with folding chairs) was on the 4th floor.

But we had good teachers and administrators (Mary Anne Hoppe and Mary Beth Purdy - yes, she's Bill Purdy's wife). Even though I didn't attend CJA during the regular school year (I went to middle school at then Mason ILC), I still felt welcomed.

That program even had free breakfast, lunch, and school bus transportation included!

Joe-
I probably taught you, but I am glad that you enjoyed those hot summers at CJA and the times @ Mason ILC.
The food service did not supply the middle schools that last week. The students had smaller lunches with less variety, as the deliveries stopped on the 9th.
